Peroneus Tertius Rupture in a Dressage Horse

by Gillian Tabor, Hartpury University Rupture of the peroneus tertius (PT) element of the equine hindlimb reciprocal apparatus is not common and the outcome of rehabilitation is not well documented in the literature. This case presents a dressage horse that had an acute lameness, localised with imaging, to the region of the tarsus and subsequently diagnosed with a severe rupture of the PT. The rehabilitation timeline is reported and discussion given to the exercise programme which, for this horse, resulted in a successful return to previous levels of training after one year.
